Important Notice For Users Of AOL

The settings that AOL's browser uses for viewing web graphics will cause many GIFS and JPEGS to download very unclear or blurry.  Because of this, many company logos, photo scans, backgrounds, etc. will appear to be of a low quality or even corrupt. AOL tech support was most helpful and provided some simple instructions to solve this problem.  The process should take 2 - 3 minutes to complete, but will make a huge difference in how you view the World Wide Web with AOL's browser.

Instructions below are for Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 only. (You may want to print them before starting the process).  Mac users will need to contact AOL tech support @ (800) 827-3338 for instructions.

Instructions for Windows 95
Sign on to AOL,

Click the Globe icon to open the World Wide Web Browser.

Above the Address Window, find the "prefs" button and click (It's located between the "Search" and "Home" buttons).

Choose "Web Graphics" from the menu.

The box that says "Use Compressed Graphics" should NOT be checked.
Uncheck that box if it is checked. (Some versions have a box that says "Use Uncompressed Graphics" instead.
If so, the "Use Uncompressed Graphics" box should be checked.)
Click OK.

Close the Web Browser
(You don't have to sign off, but you do have to close the browser before the new settings will take effect.)

Now go to your "Start" Button on the taskbar(bottom left corner of the screen).
Click the "Start" button with the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.

Click "Explore". This will open the Windows Explorer.

Click on "C" Drive (or whichever drive is your primary hard drive)

Find the "Windows" Folder and double click.

Find the Folder named "Temporary Internet Files" and double click.

At the top of window, Click the word "Edit", then "Select All". Everything should now be highlighted.

At the top of window, click the word "File", then "Delete".

When the deletion process is finished, close the Windows Explorer.

Now, Click on the globe again to reopen the browser.

If you're graphics are still blurry, check the browser settings again and be sure that the "Use Compressed Graphics" box is not checked, or that "Use Uncompressed Graphics" is checked.  If your setting is still incorrect or you haven't deleted the files in the "Temporary Internet Files" Folder, you'll have to repeat the process or you will continue to view blurry or unclear graphics from the Web.

Another alternative is to download  or . After you sign on to AOL, just open your Microsoft or Netscape browser to view the World Wide Web.

Instructions for Windows 3.1

Sign on to AOL,

Click the Globe icon to open the World Wide Web Browser.

Above the Address Window, find the "prefs" button and click(It's located between the "Search" and "Home" buttons).

Choose "Web Graphics" from the menu.

The box that says "Use Compressed Graphics" should NOT be checked. Uncheck that box if it is checked. (Some versions have a box that says "Use Uncompressed Graphics" instead.  The "Use Uncompressed Graphics" should be checked.) Click OK.

Close the Web Browser (You don't have to sign off, but you do have to close the browser before the new settings will take effect.)

Next:

Open your file manager,

Find the file folder named "AOL 30 or AOL 40" and Double Click

In that directory, find the file folder named "Cache" and delete all of its contents.

Close the file manager.

Now, Click on the globe again to reopen the browser.

If you're graphics are still blurry, check the browser settings again and be sure that the "Use Compressed Graphics" box is not checked, or that "Use Uncompressed Graphics" is checked.  If your setting is still incorrect or you haven't deleted the files stored in the AOL/Cache directory, you'll have to repeat the process or you will continue to view blurry or unclear graphics from the Web.

I hope this has been of some help to you.
